Section 1 - Investing & Personal Finance
Is "Khelo India Khelo" priced in? [LINK]
Given the above, we have seen absurdities like 500PE stocks, stocks which listed at 60PE go to 180PE, F&O despite heavy taxation booming better than big bang of the yore, heaven-pales-in-comparison sectors like defense/railways/PSUs and an absolute party sharty in SMEs. Twitter-junta is gung-ho on current Fiscal Year (not even YTD, just current fiscal year) portfolio returns of 70%, while many investors languish not having seen those portfolio returns for current + last fiscal year. If you have missed the last 4 years of equity investing while your friends/colleagues/worse, relatives have made money, there is no hell that can be worse, no heaven that will soothe your soul.
Section 2 - Economic Trends & Themes
Silver is expecting a defecit for the third consecutive year [LINK]
Michael Steinmann, CEO of the mining group Pan American Silver, talks about the robust growth in demand for the precious metal, declining global inventories as well as the company’s opportunities and challenges when it comes to new mining projects.
Section 3 - Personality study & Development
Surgeons call for warning labels on social media platforms [LINK]
There is a big debate on whether social media is harmful to mental health. Some researchers say it is causing problems, others say, social media is merely coincidental, and there are other reasons for the mental health crisis. The US Surgeon General, however, is convinced, and he is pushing for social media platforms to carry a health warning label, like how cigarette packets do. A New York Times piece unpacks the issue
Section 4 - Business History & management
Indian election system won’t work in the US [LINK]
Now that the General Elections are done with, depending on which side of the fence you sit on, EVM defending or bashing is what people engage in. But if perspective is needed, we’d urge you to read Ravikiran Rao’s well written piece on the theme. His larger point is that in a trust deficit society such as India, there are constraints you work off. And the EVM does that well in India.
Why is it called ‘the elevator’ pitch [LINK]
An elevator pitch is now a ubiquitous term heard most often in the venture capital and private equity circuits. But just where did it originate from? Jake Rossen dug the history up in Mental Floss.
Amravati : The lost city awaiting resurrection [LINK]
Andhra Pradesh CM Chandrababu Naidu's decade-old ambitious plan to build a new capital city is being pulled out of abandonment as he plays kingmaker in the central government
Section 5 - Sports, literature & Entertainment
Filing for Patents to winning super overs [LINK]
Saurabh Netravalkar has been all over the internet following his superb performances in the T20WC. In this interview with Cricbuzz, he opens up about his IT job at Oracle and failure to make it through as Indian cricketer despite playing the U19WC in mid-2000s along with Rohit Sharma etc
That's it for me. Have a great weekend ahead!
